Hiko is a tribute to traditional wooden plane toys.
Since I was a child I had a special bound to airplanes thanks to my dad profession and a personal fascination to wood joinery.
In this case I wanted to design a special object which combines both themes.
The name comes from Hikoki which means airplane in Japanese.
Hiko can be used as a bed side table or even next to your sofa.
The measurements and the honesty of the design are suitable for any kind of space.
Hiko grabs the essential shape of a classic wooden plane toy and keep it simple as
possible excluding screws, in order to use simple but strength joinery.
Hiko is made with oak hardwood carefully handcrafted using other methods like CNC Router and Laser cut. We wanted to complement the design with a special edition with inked in matt black finish, giving more elegance to the piece.
On the surface, rest a thin steel sheet coated, to make a contrast between the wood and metal. The wood shows it properties at the top part to make a beautiful joint and for the user to feel the wood when is used. At the back of the wood there´s a subtle space in order to pass you phone cable and keep your table free of visual noise. Hiko breaks the rule of a common side table with classic four legs. The pedestal and the transversal wood at the bottom part, creates a perfect balance table. Hiko is perfect for small spaces, a playful and aesthetic table for you to put your sketchbook, a mug or a carafe.
The studio is very excited because Hiko will be exhibited this year at the Mexican Pavilion in Wanted Design Manhattan 2018 as every year, among other Mexican Designers representing the best of Mexico.
